The aim of the MAMYS project is to empower young Roma girls through education and skills training in order to prevent early marriages and support their reintegration into the school system, which will ultimately increase their employability and chances of better employment.
Target
Young Roma girls (12-18 years old), the mothers of young Roma girls and Roma role models. The secondary target audience is the entire Roma community.
Specific goals
The specific objectives of the MAMYS project, which targets young Roma girls forced to marry young and leave school early, can be summarised as follows:
Developing a qualitative train-the-trainer programme that teaches partners methods that can later be used in many other projects or activities.
Training partners as future trainers for the methods used.
Raising awareness among the target group (young Roma girls and their families) and the wider community about the negative impact of early and forced marriage on girls’ education, health and social development.
Empowering young Roma girls to resist early and forced marriage by giving them information, skills and support to make informed decisions about their marriage, and support to make informed decisions about their lives and futures.
Strengthen the capacity of local Roma organisations to effectively support young Roma girls at risk of early and forced marriage and advocate for gender equality and women’s rights in their communities.
Promote intercultural dialogue and exchange of best practices between Roma and non-Roma organisations across Europe and promote a more inclusive and tolerant society.
